The Red&Black is our on campus newspaper at the University of Georgia, but unlike many campus newspapers, the Red&Black is completely independent from the university. It’s a non-profit, and as the local newspaper continues to decline, the Red&Black is rapidly becoming the only paper in Athens.
I’ve worked here for three years now, first as a staff writer, then an editor, and now as an investigative reporter, and what I’ve included below are links to some of the stories that stand out from my time there.
UGA community responds to African Studies vandalism
Just one month after the inauguration of President Trump, someone smashed the glass window of the African Studies Institute on UGA’s campus. The police investigation never amounted to anything, but those affected felt the attack very deeply.
This incident drew coverage from a lot of major news outlets, as jewish students expressed their outrage following the scheduling of a christian rock concert on Yom Kippur. Certainly not the biggest story of the year, but an important issue that needed to be covered.
And to finish things out, a story that went untold for decades. This was a missing piece of UGA’s history that the university did well to bring to light, and I want as many people to read her story as possible.
